Are We Really What We Eat?

September 1st, 2010 admin No comments

According to a 2001-2006 government health survey of approximately 3,000 children who’d been given blood tests, at least 20% of children aged 1 to 11 don’t get enough vitamin D. That puts them at risk for weak bones, infections, diabetes and some cancers. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children have 400 units of vitamin D daily. Because many children don’t drink 4 cups of fortified milk a day or eat lots of fish or spend enough time outside to get vitamin d from the sun, vitamin D supplementation is recommended. It’s the D parents will want their children to get.

According to both nutritionists and scientists, Americans have a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids. They are called essential fatty acids because they have to come from our diet – our bodies don’t make them. Omega-3 is necessary for the development of a healthy brain. It also lowers the risk of heart disease, arthritis and cancer. It even fights wrinkles. Fish like salmon, tuna and halibut are rich in omega-3 fatty acids because they eat microscopic, ocean plants and seaweed. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in the green leaves of plants. That they originate in fish is a fish story. Read more…

Calorie Cycling Plan: Does Calorie Cycling Work?

August 31st, 2010 admin No comments

Mirror, mirror on the wall
The mirror, more than the scales, makes me want to lose weight. It is true that there are numerous reasons such as strokes, heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension to try something new like calorie cycling weight loss, but what stares back at me from the mirror is the most compelling reason–unless I get one of those other conditions. Now before you go out and start looking for that brand new BMX bike, we are not talking cycling as in bicycle. We are talking about a weight loss plan that is easier than traditional dieting, gets faster results, and avoids the pitfalls of plateauing. It is an exciting way to lose weight for those who have struggled with weight loss in the past and for those who are going on a weight loss diet now.

Caveman woes
Our bodies are very frugal when it comes to their fat. Fat is the body’s safety net in case of famine or deprivation. You see, our bodies do not realize that we are living in times of comparative plenty, they still are operating under the DNA that we had as cavemen which instructed the body to convert any excess food into fat and tuck it away in its fat cells. This made sense in caveman days because you could never be sure when you would be able to club your next mammoth and the body needed stored fat to survive those lean times. As a result our bodies will quickly adapt to a reduced calorie cycle. i.e. Low calorie dieting. The metabolism slows as the caloric intake falls because our caveman DNA signals starvation to the hypothalamus which in effect turns down our metabolism thermostat. Read more…
